Book Review:
The Career Guide for Creative and Unconventional People (Third Edition)

Creative individuals are frequently challenged to find stable work that is both financially lucrative and honors their desire for self-expression, independence, and innovation. Carol Eikleberry's book, The Career Guide for Creative and Unconventional People has just been published in its updated third edition and provides a roadmap for those who have unconventional and hard-to-categorize talents. Since its initial publication in 1995, this book has become a staple in career sections in libraries because of its unique focus. Eikleberry is a licensed psychologist who has worked as a career counselor for more than 20 years, both in private practice and at university counseling centers.

Eikleberry's book helps individuals understand their creative personality and the challenges and opportunities they may encounter in the world of work. She also profiles 270 creative job possibilities while offering guidance on arranging work into a lifestyle that allows creative expression as well as financial survival. Finally, readers will learn from real-life success stories and pick up practical strategies to make a creative career a reality.

There are three main changes to this new edition. First, the section on the world of work has been updated. According to Eikleberry, "The good news is that there is proportionally more opportunity for creatives in the workforce today. For example, the June 2005 issue of Fast Company magazine examined the importance of design in business. There are more jobs today where employers are recognizing and rewarding creativity."

Secondly, 50 new occupations were added, while only ten jobs were eliminated from the Career Reference Section, a move in a positive direction. Lastly, Eikleberry put the career tools that she uses with clients and discusses in the book on her website, www.creativecareers.com. This gives readers access to tools that allow them a chance to be expressive and use the Creative Career Notebook more independently for career decision making and job search.

The Career Guide for Creative and Unconventional People serves as an important guidebook for people who want to combine their interest in a subject or field with their unique talents into a valuable package that they can offer a client, customer or employer.
